A great match

Despite the rainy afternoon, we received a very warm welcome at the home of Steve and Tegan, who introduced us to their son Jonah and his Baptist Care SA support worker Will.

“I think Baptist Care SA had a really good sense of matching up the right person with Jonah,’ Tegan says. ‘We just feel that with Will, it’s just been effortless. The first time he came in, they established a rapport.”

Jonah is a little shy at first but opens up quite quickly. When asked what sort of activities he enjoys doing with Will, Jonah’s eyes light up. ‘We go for walks, we watch videos and go to skate parks, and I like showing him my guitar.’ We ask if he’ll show us his guitar and with some gentle encouragement from Will, Jonah disappears to his room and returns with a classical guitar.

Jonah makes himself comfortable on the couch and confidently performs a song he wrote himself. He displays songwriting talent and a voice far beyond his years.

When asked how he writes the lyrics for his songs, Jonah explains “Well I just figure them out myself while I’m sitting and if I think it’s a good line for a song then I work with that.”

Mum Tegan is obviously very proud of her son and values the connection between Jonah and Will. “I think Baptist Care SA had a really good sense of matching up the right person with Jonah,’ she says. ‘We just feel that with Will, it’s just been effortless. The first time he came in, they established a rapport.”

Will has been working with Will to build independence with activities such as walking to school and expanding his friendship group. “There’s mentorship, so when they go to a skate park for example, Will talks to him about how to engage with others.”

Dad Steve, adds “We’re delighted with how things are going with Baptist Care SA. I’m really proud as a father that Jonah has taken such big steps in his maturity, and I’m looking forward to the future.”

So where does Jonah see himself in the future? “In a band,” he quickly responds. “I’m starting one at school with my friend William, who plays the drums.”

Jonah is a Baptist Care SA client and we’re delighted that he shared his day, and his song, with us.
