Baptist Care SA opens first Community Food Hub in Adelaide CBD.

We are excited to announce that we have joined forces with Foodbank SA to establish the city’s first Community Food Hub, which was officially opened in December by the Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Ms Sandy Verschoor.

This initiative gives those in need the opportunity to shop for food and essential items at a reduced cost. It offers low-priced groceries to anyone with a concession or Immi card, including pensioners, students and people experiencing homelessness.

The Baptist Care SA Food Hub was developed in direct response to a deep need within our community. By listening to clients, stakeholders and local residents, it became clear that food insecurity was a big issue in Adelaide.

“The problem of food insecurity is skyrocketing,” said Baptist Care SA Chief Executive Officer Graham Brown.

“Across Adelaide there are a growing number of people who simply don’t know where their next meal is coming from.”

In the short time since it opened its doors, our Food Hub has provided over 2,600 kilos of fresh fruit and vegetables and 1000 loaves of bread to customers at no charge.

“We have had more than 2,000 people through the doors so far and the number of people coming in each day is growing. There is obviously a real need. Talking to customers also gives us the chance to point them to other services where they can go for help,” said Mark Finlay, Coordinator at the Food Hub.

In addition to helping resolve the issue of food insecurity in the city, the wonderful staff and volunteers who run the Food Hub have made a positive first impression on customers.

“The Food Hub is an absolute asset to the community in this part of town. I like the southern hospitality – honestly the people who work here and the free fruit and veggies are an absolute blessing,”

said Susanne a regular customer.
