Meet Mark – Tumbelin Farm House Parent

What does your role involve?

I am one of the house parents. My role is to look after our residents and ensure that they have a sense of belonging during their time at Tumbelin Farm. We provide the young person under our care with a safe and homely environment to help them stay focused on recovery.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

It is wonderful to see positive changes in our residents as they start to experience a drug-free life. Engagement with the community and others help transform their personalities and make the residents feel more confident about themselves.

What do you think are the most important things about providing a good service for our residents?

At Tumbelin Farm our key objective is to provide a safe and drug-free environment to help young people begin their recovery journey and achieve lasting change.

Our team assists residents to develop life skills and equip them with the tools to deal with life’s challenges. We also help set goals and milestones to lead a more fulfilling life.

Can you give an example of a successful resident relationship you’ve had at the Farm?

I ensure I develop a good rapport with the young people and give them the confidence to approach me or other team members with any issues or challenges and work together to find solutions.

If there are challenges for residents, what sort of initiatives do you put in place to support them?

Tumbelin Farm provides an integrated approach consisting of caring, honest and respectful communication that is focused on the relationship. It is important to create a safe space for young people where they feel they can talk to us and seek advice to help navigate these challenges.

We also provide opportunities to participate in various mindfulness/meditation, art and outdoor activities. As the residents are exposed to these activities they begin to overcome challenges and experience success leading to healthy identity development.

We pride ourselves on working alongside our residents, at their pace – why do you think this is so important?

Although the residents are only there at Tumbelin Farm for a relatively short time, we enable them to develop the coping skills and inner strength necessary for long-term success.

At the same time, we understand that every young person is unique and deserves a recovery program that is specifically tailored for them to flourish. Everything we do is designed to assist young people and their families in creating lasting change.
