Michael grew up in the country. He enjoys being outside and active. Sharing activities in his community is important to him.
Now 23, he lives in his own home in Adelaide and is supported by two Baptist Care SA carers. One of them has worked for him since he was 18 years old.
“They’re really important to me because they help me organise my day, get out and about – everything goes much smoother when they’re with me” Michael explains.
Overcoming his anger and controlling his emotions is an ongoing challenge for Michael. He finds it particularly difficult in a crowd. “I really want to improve my social skills, but sometimes I feel like I’m about to explode, so it’s good to leave and come home”.
Having visitors is something Michael couldn’t have done a few years ago, but now he is relaxed and happy to chat about his garden and his interest in cooking. Daily shopping enables him to consider his health and wellbeing and try new things. He loves music and has tried his hand at several instruments.
“I’m excited about the future. The opportunity to get more involved in my community and do more… I’d like to learn how to use an electric scooter, so I can be more independent”
“It’s good to have someone to help me do what I want in my life” he says with a smile.
