Additional Homelessness Discharge Beds Welcome Respite Says Baptist Care SA

Baptist Care SA welcomes the announcement by the South Australian Government in the State Budget 2022-23 to fund an additional 20 discharge beds for people experiencing homelessness on their discharge from hospital.

The beds, which will be provided in partnership with the not-for-profit sector, will be made available from 2024-2025 to deliver on an election promise.

In 2019-2020, Baptist Care SA partnered with the Central Adelaide Local Health Network on the pilot program ‘Homeless Respite Centre’. The pilot offered safe accommodation and connection to support services. Baptist Care SA is well placed to understand the specific needs of people leaving hospital and experiencing homelessness and welcomes the State Government’s commitment as a positive step towards meeting the needs of South Australia’s most vulnerable.

Baptist Care SA, lives, works and walks on Kaurna, Peramangk and Boandik lands. We acknowledge Aboriginal people as the state’s first peoples, recognise their traditional ownership, and respect their cultural heritage, beliefs, deep connection and continued guardianship of land and waters. We value the contributions of Elders past and present, and are committed to learning from those emerging.
