It’s hard to believe that Haydon, now full of confidence and purpose, once found social situations daunting. But thanks to a remarkable learning journey, he has not only grown personally, he’s now inspiring others along the way.
With support from South Australia’s Community Connections program (CCP), Haydon developed new skills and self-awareness. “I’ve already started realising I can actually do these things,” he reflected. “I’m good enough and I deserve this.”
CCP helps people build confidence, gain new skills and feel more connected. It supports those facing challenges like mental health issues, trauma, financial stress or disability by strengthening community and improving quality of life.
For Haydon, it was anxiety and low self-confidence that made every day social situations feel overwhelming.
Traditional school wasn’t the right fit for him. He left in Year 11 after finding reading, writing and socialising too difficult. Though he thrived with hands-on learning, years of self-doubt took a toll, leading to depression and increased isolation.
Things began to turn around when Haydon, through CCP, connected with an adult community education cooking class which helped rebuild his confidence and express himself through digital media. “These are my personal achievements and my way of improving, because I want to,” Haydon said.
He now uses TikTok and podcasting to share his lived experience and connect with others.
“A year ago I would have had none of this if it wasn’t for Matteo from Baptist Care SA,” Haydon explained. “Now I’m doing it for me and my own goals. I am where I am with everything I’ve achieved because of Community Connections.”
Recently nominated as a South Australian Learning Ambassador, he’s also volunteered to share his story in a video to raise awareness and break the stigma around social isolation while living independently, volunteering in the community and mentoring young people.
