At Baptist Care SA, we are privileged to witness stories of resilience and transformation every day. Few shine brighter than volunteer Gaynor’s.
Once a regular visitor of the WestCare Centre, Gaynor came to us in one of life’s most difficult moments. A former nurse, she used all her savings to relocate interstate for health treatment only to find herself living in a tent with little support or provisions. It was then that she discovered WestCare which became her lifeline – a safe place to shower, share a meal, and find security.
Through the care and connection she experienced, Gaynor rebuilt her life, eventually moving into her own two-bedroom unit. But her journey didn’t end there. Encouraged by Mary, one of our dedicated support workers, Gaynor stepped into volunteering. What began as a new door opening soon became a new purpose.
Today, Gaynor gives back with the same compassion she once received. She volunteers two days a week in general support at WestCare and another day at our Community Food Hub, helping provide low-cost groceries to people doing it tough. On Sundays, she volunteers after breakfast to help clean up, and she also steps in during Code Red and Code Blue events, supporting WestCare as it opens its doors to keep people safe during extreme weather.
She and Mary are now an inseparable “dream team,” ensuring everything runs smoothly, always reliable, and always ready to go the extra mile.
What makes Gaynor remarkable is more than the hours she gives. It’s her deep understanding of the lived experiences of our clients. She helps staff and volunteers alike better appreciate the challenges people face, bringing empathy and insight that can’t be taught. Her presence not only strengthens our services – it lifts our entire community.
Gaynor’s journey is a reminder that volunteering isn’t just about giving back; it’s about belonging, resilience, and turning hardship into hope.
